art & the computer

The single largest growth area in art over the last ten years is computer art. The advent of the personal computer in the late 1980s, especially the Apple Macintosh, put a new tool in the hands of creative artists.

Computer artAt the centre of this computer art explosion is Adobe Photoshop, software that started life as file exchange utility, but went on to become the most used image manipulation program in the world - the only limitations were the power of the computer that ran the program and the artist's imagination.

Early pioneers of computer art were the Zap Art International brothers Peter and Bernard Gudynas from Birmingham - they were at the heart of the new art back in the 1990s and were very influential in bringing computer made art to the public.

Today there are hundreds of extremely talented artists producing contemporary, computer art - from photo-realisic image manipulation to pure abstract art - and slowly but surely computer art is finding its way into galleries, boardrooms, reception areas, offices, hotels and private homes.
